Biography:

Mary Ellen Calloway-Kincaid was born on December 31, 1957, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to prosecutor Henry Calloway and nurse Pauline Jovanovic. As the eldest of three sisters—Charlotte and Cassandra—Mary graduated as a Salutatorian from Sault Area High School in 1974. She attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 1974 to 1978, following in her mother’s footsteps. During her time at Michigan, she pledged to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and served as Vice President of the Central Student Government in 1977. Mary earned her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 1978.

Mary applied to only one law school, the University of Chicago Law School, where she was admitted. There, she was elected as Class Representative for the Law Student Association in 1979 and later served as its President in 1980. She graduated with her Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago Law School. Following her graduation, Mary clerked for Judge Benjamin F. Gibson of the United States Western District of Michigan from October 1981 to October 1982. She then clerked for Associate Justice Harry Blackmun of the U.S. Supreme Court from October 1982 to October 1983. Mary worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, handling criminal and constitutional law cases before returning to Michigan. She joined the Western District of Michigan as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, focusing on the Criminal Division. On March 2, 1986, she married social studies high school teacher, Randolph Kincaid. The next year, they had their first son, Samuel.

In 1988, Mary decided to run for Michigan’s 91st District Court seat after her great-uncle announced his retirement. She joined her family’s law firm in Sault Ste. Marie, despite facing significant challenges, won the judicial seat in November 1988. Known for her direct yet compassionate approach, Judge Calloway-Kincaid was quoted in a newspaper interview: “The justice system must create justice for the offended and the offender. The victim of the crime should feel protected and respected while the offender should be corrected and revitalized.” In 1990, she birthed her second son Ethan who was born one month early.

In 1992, Mary ran for Michigan’s 1st congressional district seat. She won the Democratic nomination and defeated former Republican Congressman Phillip Edward Ruppe in the general election. During her ten years in Congress, she served on the House Agriculture Committee, Housing Judiciary Committee, and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee. She was a founding member of the Blue Dog Coalition and became Ranking Member of the Housing Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice in 1997. In 2002, she ran in a competitive Democratic primary for governor, defeating Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, Congressman David Bonior, and former Governor James Blanchard. Mary won the general election against Republican Lieutenant Governor Richard Posthumus.

As Michigan’s first female governor, she was re-elected in 2006, defeating Republican businessman Dick DeVos. Her tenure was marked by significant achievements, including reducing the state deficit, education reform, establishing the $2 billion 21st Century Jobs Fund, and creating the No Worker Left Behind Act. Mary endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2008 primary and served on President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team. After her term limit in 2010, she retired from politics and moved to Detroit to be closer to her husband’s job.

In 2014, Mary ran for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Senator Carl Levin. She won the Democratic primary unopposed and defeated Republican candidate Terri Lynn Land in the general election. In the Senate, she joined the Third-Way faction of the Democratic Party. She endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and supported Joe Biden in 2020. Mary narrowly won re-election against Republican nominee John James by 1.92 points. She initially called for Biden to retire in November 2023 but later endorsed him once he remained on the ballot.

Approved, masked, and added to Senate Roster. Welcome back! On our current Senate Roster we don't have a Class II seat available, so I gave you the Class III seat so you have until 2028 until facing re-election.
