      S.001 | Price Gouging Prevention Act of 2024

      Mr. President. Let me rise to say that it takes a lot of courage to come out and acknowledge that the last three years under President Biden has been a disaster. After all, the sponsor has stated that disasters can lead to increased prices. So, glad to see that the sponsor is finally on the same page as everybody else in America dealing with inflation and the disaster that has been this presidency. Nonetheless, I believe the gentle lady from Nevada is being somewhat misleading about the intent of this bill. I’ve become very familiar with the rhetoric being pushed in the more left-leaning echo chamber and they will tell you that this is designed to address so-called price-gouging “anytime and anywhere.” And their definition of price gouging is absurd. Stop pretending that this is designed to address price gouging in disasters. We are not stupid. I’ve heard Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky of Illinois talk about price gouging in the grocery industry with relationship to this. Yet, the current profit margin for grocery stores across this country has been about 1.6 percent. That’s price gouging to those who want this bill passed. A 1.6 percent profit. In the end, what we have here are price controls. Anyone who knows the history of that knows the catastrophic failure of that policy. In the early 1970s, food yields went down 15-25 percent in this country. Wheat was particularly hard hit. A nation that could once feed the world became almost incapable of feeding itself. The price controls under President Nixon may have been popular to some, but when the aftermath was a turbulent agricultural sector that saw bankruptcies and economic decline we know what a failure was and we want to do the same thing again with this legislation. And for those who hate big corporations, the bankruptcies that will come from this will be the family farms while large-scale agribusiness corporations will weather these asinine policies. You will be left with large corporate farms when the dust clears. The reality of economic life is that we have had a deluge of federal spending that has driven abnormal demand outside of traditional supply-and-demand market forces. We’ve seen energy costs rise, leading to cost-push inflationary cycles. And in the past three years, this administration has taken a turn from the Trump administration’s rollback of the regulatory state to inflict regulatory cost. And yet, this bill wants to pretend that the market forces emanating from that economic reality means treating a symptom not the cause. This policy failed in the 1970s. It will fail today. I yield.

      S.006 | Hamas Condemnation Resolution

      Madam President, I rise today to express my support for the resolution and to speak unequivocally in favor of Israel’s right to defend itself against terror. Hamas has repeatedly shown its willingness to use violence and terror to further its political aims, targeting innocent civilians and undermining any efforts toward peace in the region. These actions are not only inexcusable but also directly attack the principles of security, stability, and peace. As a strong ally of Israel, the United States must stand by its side in the face of such threats. Israel has every right to protect its citizens from violence, and we must continue to support its efforts to ensure the safety and security of its people. The bond between our two nations is built on shared values of democracy, freedom, and a commitment to peace. But as we offer this unwavering support, we must also acknowledge the broader context in which this conflict exists. While we condemn Hamas for its acts of terror, we cannot ignore the profound humanitarian crisis facing the people of Gaza. The siege-like conditions, the lack of basic necessities, and the desperation that fuels extremism must also be addressed. Many of the people in Gaza are caught between a rock and a hard place - between the occupation and the terror of Hamas - and they deserve better. We cannot let condemnation be the only message we send. Israel’s security and pursuit of a just, lasting peace are not mutually exclusive. Both must be part of our policy moving forward. This is why I call on my colleagues to support diplomatic efforts that work toward a two-state solution, providing both Israelis and Palestinians with security, sovereignty, and peace. We must be clear: condemning Hamas is critical, but peace cannot be achieved by military means alone. It requires bold leadership, commitment to dialogue, and, most importantly, addressing the root causes of violence and despair. We must work together to rebuild Gaza’s infrastructure, offer humanitarian aid, and create economic opportunities for its people. Only through such efforts can we begin to break the cycle of violence and offer hope for a peaceful future. Madam President, our responsibility is not just to condemn terror. It is to build a future where terror has no place. With that, I yield.

      S.005 | Working Families Tax Relief Act of 2024

      Madam President, For far too long, our tax system has favored the wealthy while leaving hardworking Americans behind. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, pushed by the former President, created one of the largest transfers of wealth to the top in decades. While the rich got richer, millions of working families continued to scrape by, living paycheck to paycheck. The Working Families Tax Relief Act before us today aims to change that by offering targeted tax relief to those who need it most. This bill significantly increases the Earned Income Tax Credit for low- and middle-income workers, ensuring that millions of working Americans can keep more of their hard-earned money. The Earned Income Tax Credit has long been one of the most effective anti-poverty programs in this country, and expanding it will mean that more families can afford basic necessities—housing, food, and healthcare—without sacrificing their future. It expands the Child Tax Credit and makes it fully refundable, ensuring that every family—especially low-income families—gets the full benefit of this credit. This is a game-changer. It helps reduce child poverty and gives parents the support they need to cover the costs of raising children. We know the power of the Child Tax Credit. In recent years, it has lifted millions of children out of poverty, helping families provide better opportunities for their kids. But this bill is about more than just a few tax credits! It’s about creating an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy. When we invest in working families, we invest in the future of this country. We’re supporting the parents who are raising the next generation of innovators, leaders, and workers. We’re ensuring that every family has the opportunity to thrive, no matter where they come from or what they earn. I have met countless families across Nevada who would directly benefit from this bill—families who are working multiple jobs to make ends meet, single parents who are trying to provide for their kids while facing skyrocketing costs, and young workers who are just starting out and struggling under the weight of student loans and high living expenses. These families deserve our support. They deserve a tax system that reflects their contributions to our economy and society. This bill is about good policy, and it’s the right thing to do. It provides immediate relief to those who need it most and helps level the playing field for millions of hardworking Americans. By putting money back into the pockets of working families, we are strengthening our economy, reducing poverty, and helping ensure that every child has a fair shot at success. I urge my colleagues to support the Working Families Tax Relief Act. I yield.
