  1. Press Release #001: Charlotte O'Hare announces campaign for Senate

Hilo, Hawaii - Q1 2024, Hawaiian State Senator for the second district and 2021 Hawaiian teacher of the year Charlotte O'Hare announces her campaign for the United States Senate. The State Senator would be one of the youngest Senators ever at exactly thirty years old. She was born on the island of Hawaii and lives in her hometown of Hilo with her husband and two children. In her announcement she pledged to be a progressive voice for Hawaii in the United States Senate. In a speech she gave in front of a hometown crowd in Hilo she stated, "It is clear that this is the time for bold ideas and shooting for the stars. We need to take action on healthcare, on climate change, on education. We can't simply say our goal is to get a compromised position and then compromise further and further until the plan simply will not accomplish what we want. We need to fight for Medicare for all, for the Green New Deal, for student debt forgiveness, and free public university. From there we can compromise to actually help Hawaiians and Americans across the US. Climate change might feel like a far-off problem for a lot of Americans, but we can actively see that it is a problem that must be addressed right now. Our great state has one of the lowest uninsured rates in the country at four percent and that it still far too high. Student loan debt in our state is at four billion dollars and rising. These are just a few of the many challenges our state is facing. I taught elementary kids during the pandemic, I'm not afraid of tough challenges, and as your senator I pledge to always take the tough challenge to improve our great state. I will be a progressive voice for our beautiful state! On July 31st, let's elect a fresh Progressive voice to the Senate!

Senator Charlotte O'Hare was born to a middle-class family in Honolulu, Hawai'i. She is the youngest of three children to her parents. Her two brothers are John and Scott, they are five and two years older than her respectively. Her father Anthony Webster is the branch manager of CU Hawaii in Hilo. Her mother Emma Webster is a University Professor at the University of Hawai'i as a researcher and part time Astronomy Lecturer. Her mother was born and raised in Hawaii, while her father relocated to Hawaii after studying at the University of Hawai'i with a sports scholarship. Her childhood was fairly normal for a middle-class family in Hawaii. She spent a lot of time at the beach, reading, and playing board games. From a young age she earned some money babysitting. Her parents are lifelong Democrats, they were vocal supports of Vice President Al Gore, John Kerry, President Obama, Secretary Clinton, and President Joe Biden.

She attended Waiakea High School where she played on the Softball team and tutored other students after school. She graduated as valedictorian in 2012. After graduating High school, she attended University of Hawai'i for Education with a focus on Elementary Education. While in school she ran the board game club, elected to the student government, and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. During the fall semester of her freshman year in college, she volunteered for Barack Obama's reelection campaign. In her freshman year a rotation player who saw playing time for the Rambow Wahine during their season where they won the Big West conference championship and made it to the regional finals in the NCAA tournament. She became a starter in her sophomore year. in 2015 she graduated summa cum laude. After graduating she transferred to the University of Washington and played in the NCAA tournament for a second time in 2016 where the Huskies would make the super-regionals before falling to the University of Alabama.

While in Grad School she met her future husband, William O’Hare, an Irish immigrant who came to the US to attend the University of Washington to become a doctor. They got married in 2016. They have two children Emily b. 2020 and Olivia b. 2022. They currently own a home in the Senator’s hometown of Hilo, Hawaii. Currently William runs his own pediatrics office in Hilo. William and Charlotte met on an on-campus event where they both volunteered as tour guides for young children at the university. They bonded over the mutual love for kids and similar desires to be working in careers that worked heavily with children. Emily attends a public preschool in Hilo.

After graduating she got a job teaching at Ernest Bowen de Silva Elementary School in her hometown of Hilo. She taught there from 2016 to 2022. She taught 3rd graders during her time there and in 2021 she won the Hawaii State Teacher of the year for her quick adaptation of unique circumstances of the pandemic and the help she provided to teachers who were struggling to use online resources. During the 2016 presidential campaign she supported Bernie Sanders in the Primary and Hillary Clinton in the General. In 2020 she supported Elizabeth Warren in the Primary and Joe Biden in the general. In 2022 she left the school and decided to run for the State Senate for local district. She ran on a progressive platform to helping provide schools with the resources they need to help students catch up post pandemic and provide educators with the resources they need to be the most effective. In the State Senate she has been seen as a vocal progressive leader, who is capable of compromising when needed to get things done. After the surprise retirement of Mazie Hirono, Charlotte O'Hare announced that she would seek the seat. Privately she was doing this to help build a statewide profile and to keep other candidates honest on progressive ideals. However, the primary was hotly contested, and she won a deeply divided primary with 37% of the vote, on a platform a working with all members of the Democratic party to achieve progressive ideas and pushing for much needed action on tough issues.
